Canvas STUDIO Overview

Summary

The goal of this guide is to familiarize the user with the visual and navigational layout of the Canvas Studio application. By taking a bird's-eyed view of the application, the user will become more comfortable with the application's overall scope and functionality.

📌 Purpose

  • There are three tools (applications) currently available in Studio.
  • ADD MEDIA: allows the user to collect and organize links from popular video services from the web, like Vimeo and YouTube. 
  • Studio Capture: allows the user to record their device camera and select regions to capture in the screen.
  • Screencast-O-Matic (BETA) so it may or may not function well.

STUDIO DESKTOP

A.) We can access the STUDIO through the link in the global navigational menu to the left. The first aspect of STUDIO to recognize that the link is located on the global navigational menu. What this means is that the media that is created, collected, and organized is NOT attach to course curricula, but your user account. 

B.)  An account with no media will display a message, "Nothing here yet!" By clicking either the ADD VIDEOS or CREATE in the upper corner, you can start the acquisition process.

ADD MEDIA

Clicking create +CREATE reveals the drop-down menu. The first item to be considered is ADD MEDIA.

MEDIA ACQUISITION

The two panel pop-up window provides options for adding online media and locally stored media on your computer.
Selecting either option will allow you acquire an asset that will appear in your library.

SCREENCAST-O-MATIC

To use techniques that require screen captures, select Screen-o-Matic from the drop-down menu. If this is the first time that you are using Screen-o-matic, you will be prompted to download an application. This application essential allows you record the video on your computer, before uploading to the STUDIO.

DOWNLOAD SCREEN CAPTURE APPLICATION

Select DOWNLOAD to begin the application install process and follow the onscreen prompts.

OPEN SCREEN RECORDER LAUNCHER

After installing, the Screen-o-matic link will prompt you to launch the application.

SCREEN-O-MATIC OPTIONS

A.) The toolbar offers a variety of graphical tools which can be used in real-time.  

B.) The RECORD menu provides options for image source, like webcam, screen or both. The dotted line that forms a box is the area of the screen that is captured. There are preset standard sizes available, but it can also be manually resized. The NARRATION allows for switching mic sources. And, the COMPUTER AUDIO allows you capture the sound that is produced by the computer. PREFERENCES provides some other recording settings.

STUDIO CAPTURE

Another option on the CREATE drop-down menu is the the STUDIO CAPTURE function. 

When clicked, a window pops-up and begins streaming your camera's image. The settings box at the bottom of the window, which has been given emphasis with a red box, has a few important settings: (left to right) camera input, mic input, Screen Capture, and recording control.

SCREEN CAPTURE

Selecting the SCREEN CAPTURE setting presents the option to enable (or disable) screen capture.
Now, this screen capture functions differently from the Screen-o-matic. With this tool, you have to select Tab, Window, or Enitre Screen before you start to recording.

SCREEN SHARE OPTIONS

By selecting ENABLE, a dialog window appears with a number of options for sharing your screen, ranging from tabs in the browser to an application window, or the the entire screen. Also, understand that you will have to set permission on your computer's settings to allow sharing.

SAVING THE VIDEO CAPTURE

When you stop recording, a window pop-up with options for saving or re-recording the video. This window has a player built-in. allowing you to preview the record. Therefore, you are able to review before saving or re-recording the video. 

Lastly, name the video before saving.

DELETING A VIDEO

A.) All of your saved videos are stored in MY LIBRARY.
B.) To delete a video, you need to ARCHIVE the video by e dots associated with the file.
C.) Then, select ARCHIVE
D.) From the archive folder, 
E.) Select the three dots
F.) and PERMANENTLY DELETE the video.
