๐Ÿ“Œ Purpose

  • Explain how to change the default mail application on macOS devices so that mailto: links (like support@salve.edu) open in Outlook instead of Apple Mail.
  • Clarify why the setting may be unavailable (“grayed out”) and how to enable it.

  • Faculty / Staff / Students using macOS devices

  • macOS (MacBook, iMac, or Mac mini)

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Instructions

๐Ÿ”น Before You Begin
  • In order to change your default mail app, the macOS Mail application must have at least one mail account set up.
  • If you open Mail → Settings → General and the Default email reader dropdown is grayed out, that means no accounts are configured yet.
  • To fix this:
    1. Open the Mail app.
    2. Go to MailSettingsAccounts.
    3. Click + and add any mail account (it doesn’t have to be your Salve account).
    4. Once an account is added, you’ll be able to change the default mail reader setting.
๐Ÿ”น Step 1: Open the Mail App
  1. On your Mac, open the Mail app from the Dock or via Spotlight search.
  2. If this is your first time using Mail, follow the prompt to add an account.
๐Ÿ”น Step 2: Open Mail Settings
  1. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click MailSettings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
  2. Select the General tab.
๐Ÿ”น Step 3: Change the Default Mail App
  1. Locate the dropdown labeled Default email reader.
  2. Select Microsoft Outlook (or your preferred email client) from the list.
  3. Close the settings window — your change will be saved automatically.
๐Ÿ”น Step 4: Test the Change
  1. Click any mailto: link (for example, support@salve.edu).
  2. Verify that a new email message opens in Outlook instead of Mail.

๐Ÿ’ก Troubleshooting & Tips

  • If Outlook doesn’t appear as an option, make sure it’s installed and up to date.
  • You can remove the temporary account from Apple Mail after changing the default mail app — the setting will stay in place.
  • If Default email reader becomes grayed out again, recheck that at least one mail account is still active in Apple Mail.
