- Clarify why the setting may be unavailable (“grayed out”) and how to enable it.
๐ฅ Audience

๐ ๏ธ Instructions
๐น Before You Begin
- In order to change your default mail app, the macOS Mail application must have at least one mail account set up.
- If you open Mail → Settings → General and the Default email reader dropdown is grayed out, that means no accounts are configured yet.
- To fix this:
- Open the Mail app.
- Go to Mail → Settings → Accounts.
- Click + and add any mail account (it doesn’t have to be your Salve account).
- Once an account is added, you’ll be able to change the default mail reader setting.
๐น Step 1: Open the Mail App
- On your Mac, open the Mail app from the Dock or via Spotlight search.
- If this is your first time using Mail, follow the prompt to add an account.
๐น Step 2: Open Mail Settings
- In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click Mail → Settings (or Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Select the General tab.
๐น Step 3: Change the Default Mail App
- Locate the dropdown labeled Default email reader.
- Select Microsoft Outlook (or your preferred email client) from the list.
- Close the settings window — your change will be saved automatically.
๐น Step 4: Test the Change
- Click any mailto: link (for example, support@salve.edu).
- Verify that a new email message opens in Outlook instead of Mail.
๐ก Troubleshooting & Tips
- If Outlook doesn’t appear as an option, make sure it’s installed and up to date.
- You can remove the temporary account from Apple Mail after changing the default mail app — the setting will stay in place.
- If Default email reader becomes grayed out again, recheck that at least one mail account is still active in Apple Mail.
