"Back in December, we had a call with your team to determine the best way to link your terms.
At that time, it was discussed that Graduate terms would be linked to Graduate, Professional Studies would be linked to Professional Studies, and Undergraduate would be linked to Undergraduate.
We were able to adjust the term linking on the back end then, which is why you may see one term selected as the course term while another term is linked. We no longer have the ability to make these back-end linking adjustments, so any term linking must now be configured at the time the term is initially created."
"If you would like to continue with the same linking structure, you can still link Graduate to Graduate, Professional Studies to Professional Studies, and Undergraduate to Undergraduate. This would result in three separate linking tracks. As a result, if you need to make an institutional update across all syllabi, you would need to locate and update the corresponding component within each parent template (Graduate, Undergraduate, and Professional Studies source templates)."
"I do want to note that once a term’s end date has passed, the link is no longer active. For example, reviewing your site, any template or continuous course master updates made in the Spring 2026 Graduate term would update Spring 2026 Graduate I and Spring 2026 Graduate II. Similarly, an update made in the Spring 2026 Professional Studies template would update Spring 2026 Professional Studies II."
"So term linking brings in three things: The templates from the term you select, Continuous course master edits (as long as the end date has not passed), and Template edits on the templates page!"

"In addition, if you would like the most recent course master edits to pull into Summer Semester, linking to Spring 2026 Graduate will also achieve this. If there is a course master in Summer Semester that is not in Spring 2026 Graduate II, the document’s content will still be pulled from the last time the course master was completed regardless of term link status."

🛠️ Creating Terms
When Terms are created in Simple Syllabus, they CAN be edited later on. The semester that the syllabus is importing from, CANNOT be changed. This will be explained in greater detail below.

To begin making terms in Simple Syllabus, launch the ADMIN site https://salve.simplesyllabus.com/
Select the ADMIN link from the header menu.

When the drop-down menu appears, select TERMS.

The create a new TERM select the ADD NEW button.

- Type in the semester following the established naming convention
- Enter in the semester start date.
- Enter in the semester end date.
- This field should be left blank.
- Enter the Canvas ID for the term (The instructions for locating this number are provided below.)
- Course Master Editing and Syllabus Editing allow for faculty visibility and editing functions.
- Checking the Publish box allows the students to view the syllabus.
The LINK TO SOURCE TERM sets the term which will provide the template.
This selection can not be changed so be sure of your choice!
To find the Canvas ID for the term being created, open Canvas, select ADMIN and choose TERMS from the navigational menu.
- The terms will be listed with the same naming convention found in Simple Syllabus.
- Select the link that provides the number of courses for the term, which are highlighted in the reference image.
With the term selected and displaying in the drop-down menu on the page with related classes, look for the number in address bar. This is the Canvas ID for the term.
It should go without saying, that the Canvas course shells have to be published before the terms can be created in Simple Syllabus.
With Canvas ID entered for the term you are creating, select the LINK TO SOURCE TERM checkbox and enter the term that has the template that you want to use.
Make sure the ACTIVE box is checked, and select the SAVE button.
🛠️ Removing a Term
If you make a mistake, like pulling a template from the wrong semester, there three items that have to be changed in the term details:
- Name - The term name has to be unique, so it needs to be changed to something else.
- Canvas ID - This is not a required field, so it can simply be erased.
- Active - Deselect this field, and then it can easily be filtered from the Simple Syllabus archive.
